Car Travel with Kids

Are we there yet? How many parents have suffered through hours of questions, bathroom breaks, car sickness, and bickering children, just to arrive at a vacation destination (or other trip destination) tired, fed up, and wishing for home? But, how do parents survive car trips with kids with their sanity intact?

Parenting Tips to Make Long Drives Easier on you and your Child.

Preschoolers and Kindergartners need almost constant stimulation. They're active, inquisitive, and energetic. Because they've got a ton of energy to burn, they need to be occupied. If you're lucky, your kid loves to sleep in the car, but, more likely, you'll have to make some concessions.

Plan Distractions when Traveling with Kids

Be prepared to make frequent stops on the way. A simple distraction of going to the bathroom at a rest stop, stretching your legs, or sitting at a roadside picnic table for twenty minutes can help kids make it through a long car trip without driving you to distraction. Sure, it'll add time to the drive, but your sanity is worth it.

Snacks make Traveling with Children Easier

Be prepared with snacks. Unless you want to visit every vending machine and fast food joint along the way, pack a bag of healthy snacks that will survive the road. Try carrots, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and dried fruits and nuts. Since your child isn't likely to enjoy eating peanuts for 500 miles, make sure you pack a variety. Throw in a few juice boxes or bottled water too. Yes, you'll need more bathroom breaks, but it's a small price to pay for happy kids.

Car Games for Kids

Parents who pack without planning are asking for trouble. Make sure that you bring a fun bag full of games for kids in the car. Include books, coloring books, and small toys for hours of entertainment. The car radio can be a great way to pass the time. Put in a fun CD or tune in to a kid's station and sing along with your child. You can also play road games like the alphabet game, counting cows, or looking for silly road signs. Road trips are also a great time to simply talk to your child. Being cooped up in a car can be as much of an annoyance for kids as it is for adults. But, battling with your child to get him to take it easy on a long ride is not going to be pleasant for anyone. Plan ahead for a smooth and enjoyable trip.
