Potato Asteroids
Asteroids have long held the attention of nearly all civilizations. From movies to books, these space objects have captivated the imaginations of people for decades. But the asteroids on the big screen are a bit different from the real deal. This fun activity will allow your children to learn what asteroids really are while making creative—and edible—replicas of these space objects.
Activity Instructions
Star by printing or viewing the information about asteroids. If you would like, do some more research to present to your kids, based upon their current understanding of space.
Prepare the mashed potatoes in whatever way you prefer (from scratch, from an instant mix, etc.). Make sure that they do not become too soft, as the kids will need to be able to mold them.
After the mashed potatoes are complete, add butter, salt, pepper, and grated cheese to taste. Grease the cookie sheet and preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Have your kids shape the mashed potatoes into asteroids. As they are working, share some of the interesting facts you have discovered through your research. If possible, have a computer handy to look up any questions your children may have.
Once all of the asteroids are complete, put them into the oven for 20 to 25 minutes. They should be slightly brown when they are finished and will make a wonderful complement to your family’s dinner!
Warning: Avoid the temptation of having the kids crash the asteriods into each other!
